Archimedes' Screw pump While in Alexandria, he invented a device now known as Archimedes' screw . It was first used to pump water out of ships and was later used in irrigation. A long, helical pipe if tilted 45 degrees and the lower end is inserted in water then Rotating the pipe moves water up to and out the top.
